How to Take the Best—and Most Efficient—Family Wedding Photos!

Don't want your family wedding photos to take hours? Neither does anyone else! Photo sessions take time away from other important parts of the day (like the cocktails), so let’s get it done!

It's like the only tangible memory some folks will have of themselves in all their fancy wedding attire! And hey, let’s not forget about those long-lost relatives who flew in from who-knows-where just to join the celebration!

So, What's the Standard Lineup for Family Pics?

For the sake of being inclusive, we are using partner 1 and partner 2!

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 1's parents

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 1's siblings

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 1, siblings, and grandparents

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 1's extended crew (cousins and whatnot)

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with all the parents in the house

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 2's parents

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 2's parents and siblings

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 2, siblings, and grandparents

  • Partner 1 and Partner 2 with Partner 2's extended gang (more cousins, yay!)

Oh, and let's set a limit here, okay? No more than 10 groups, tops. Otherwise, we might as well camp out there all night, missing out on the party action. We can always sneak some shots of other groups during the reception if needed.

When's the Snap-Happy Moment?

We like to tackle these formal photos right after the ceremony. You know, before everyone starts making a beeline for the bar. And here’s the deal: these family pics usually won't drag on for more than 30 minutes. Promise.

Lending a Hand to Your Friendly Photographer

Give us a list of names for each face in the group. Having a name to match that grinning face will make our lives a whole lot easier. Oh, and if you can tap one of your wedding squad to play Wrangler.

Oh, But What About That Epic Group Shot?

Want a picture with everyone? Just ask your officiant to give a shout-out after the "I do's" and direct everyone to the designated picture spot. Boom, done!

Notifying the Stars of the Photos Before the Big Day

Let your family and friends know beforehand that they’re in the photo lineup. Give them a heads-up about when and where they'll need to be, so there’s no hunting people down or trying to pry Uncle Bob away from the cocktail hour. When everyone knows they’re in for a quick photo op, it speeds things up and keeps the vibes positive!

Prioritising the Oldies and the Littlies

When it comes to the photo lineup, let's start with the oldies and the littles first. Grandparents, great-aunts, who might not be able to stand for too long, or just want to get out of the weather. Plus, it’s best to get the kiddies done first before any possible tears.

Hope that helps!
